Game 5 world series
Freeman hit a two-run single to tie the Series record of 12 RBIs, set by Bobby Richardson over seven games in 1960, and was voted Series MVP. With the Dodgers one out from losing Friday’s opener, Freeman hit a game-ending grand slam reminiscent of Kirk Gibson’s homer off Oakland’s Dennis Eckersley in 1988’s Game 1 that sparked Los Angeles to the title.
These Dodgers of Ohtani, Freeman and Betts joined the 1955 Duke Snider and Roy Campanella Boys of Summer, the Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale era that spanned the three titles from 1959-65, the Tommy Lasorda-led groups 1981 and ’88, and the Betts and Clayton Kershaw champions of 2020.
• Home runs were a theme. Of the 49 runs scored in this Fall Classic, 30 were via homers. That’s 61.2 percent of runs scored via homer, the highest in any World Series, surpassing 57.4% in 2017 (39 of 68 runs).
Yankees: The eighth-inning rally in Game 4 was significant because it saved Luke Weaver (21 pitches) from having to return to the mound for the ninth, keeping him available for Game 5. Other relievers to appear in Game 4 were Tim Hill (five pitches), Clay Holmes (13 pitches), Mark Leiter Jr. (18 pitches) and Tim Mayza (15 pitches).
Gerrit Cole will pitch for New York in Game 5, and while the Dodgers took Game 1 with Cole pitching, the Yankees ace gave up only one earned run. The Dodgers got five off the Yankees’ bullpen in four innings, of course including Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam. Los Angeles will roll with Jack Flaherty, who gave up two runs, five hits, and had six strikeouts in Game 1.
• That five-run comeback? It was the largest in a World Series-clinching win, surpassing 1925 Game 7, when the Pirates trailed by four. This was the 120th World Series, so that’s quite the sample size.
World series game 4
The Dodgers sliced the lead to one with two runs, both charged to Luis Gil, in the fifth inning, but New York’s bullpen stymied them from there. Five Yankees relievers held the Dodgers without a hit over the final four innings while the offense worked against Los Angeles’ slew of relievers.
The Yankees’ superstar, Aaron Judge, also put together some of his best at bats of the postseason, going 1-for-3 with an RBI single. The hotter Judge can get, the more realistic a Yankees comeback could become. While Tuesday’s performance showed that New York won’t go down without a fight, the team still has a long journey to get back in this series.
Dodgers: It was clear, almost from the onset, that the Dodgers were basically punting Game 4. Six of their high-leverage relievers threw a combined 100 pitches in their win the prior night, the first of three consecutive games in New York. Their plan in Game 4 was to turn to those arms again only if they held a lead. And because their lead evaporated early — when the Yankees put together a four-run third inning to take a 5-2 advantage — the Dodgers’ best arms didn’t enter.
Faced with the prospect of becoming the first Yankees team to be swept in the World Series since 1976, the Bronx Bombers instead provided a needed reminder of why this Fall Classic featuring No. 1 seeds and iconic franchises attracted so many eyes and so much flowery coverage in the first place.
Volpe avenged his blunder with the most important swing of his life in the third inning. Hudson, the second reliever the Dodgers deployed for their scheduled bullpen day, hit Aaron Judge with a pitch, yielded a single to Jazz Chisholm Jr. and walked Giancarlo Stanton to load the bases. After Anthony Rizzo popped out, Volpe came to the plate with two outs looking for a fastball. But he recognized the spin on Hudson’s slider after striking out against him in Game 3 and pounced, igniting the building and altering the trajectory of the series.
